Sustainable Development

The International Journal - Sustainable Development

Is a major international vehicle for interchange of scientific information and analysis, catering to the needs of the global Environment and Development community and of decision-makers at all levels. It serves to provide better, more accurate, and timely information on emerging issues of environment and development, to be used in designing responses to them. It facilitates access to better knowledge of the resource-base, natural and social processes and human aspirations, as a means to dealing with the immediate problems of global change, desertification and deforestation, rehabilitation, fulfillment of basic needs and other demographic and social issues which need to be tackled with the most appropriate investments and policies.

The dilemma faced by decision-makers in their effort to devise sustainable policies is compounded by the often conflicting advice they receive from their technical advisors, the lack of validation of information available to them, and the time lags between decisions and their impact. Although many political decisions are taken for reasons other than their purely scientific merit, more reliable and timely information helps in making them more tuned to the needs of sustainability.

The scientists, on the other hand, have had a tendency to work on issues that are of intrinsic scientific interest, but often quite abstract, not necessarily of direct applicability or relevance to the needs of decision-makers, or the community at large.

The Journal helps to :

1. Determine both the critical and available scientific data and information required to improve incorporation of environmental considerations into strategic-level development planning.

2. Evaluate and further develop the current and potential use of existing technologies and institutions to contribute to sustainable development.

3. Increase the influence of scientific information in the development planning process.

4. Harmonize the needs of Sustainable Conservation and Large, Medium and Small scale industrial development.
